Week 02 brings all sorts of excitement with three works that while very different from one another, share a certain visual 'roundness' that is difficult not to notice...

maotik and Fraction's Obe, a brand new interactive installation at Montreal's SAT is announced; and Solaris is a beautiful new visual exploration by Bartek Szlachcic a designer just learning TouchDesigner. gen.er.a.trix, a real-time audiovisual performance from Ali Phi appears on Vimeo leaving us moved and speechless. Enjoy!

gen.er.a.trix from Ali Phi

Ali Phi: real-time visuals, processed guitar sounds
Sohrab Motabar: real-time audio coding
Sina Shoaie: real-time music

Hauntingly beautiful real-time audiovisual performance from Ali Phi aka Elamaun (real-time visuals, processed guitar sounds), Sohrab Motabar (real-time audio coding) and Sina Shoaie (real-time music).

Ali tells us: Generatrix, dictionaries say, refers to a point, line or surface whose motion generates a line, surface, or solid.

Apart from the common forms - minimal, fully computer-processed audiovisual performances, the performance before you has tried to make use of previous techniques to depict the concepts of creation from the beginning in four episodes: formation, completion, anxiety and change.

In this performance, Sohrab Motabar will make use of codification techniques of sound synthesis & audio coding, combined with the processed sounds of regional Iranian music presented by Sina Shoaei, and processed electric guitar sounds of Ali Phi (also on visuals) to present the piece.

All sounds and changes will be produced and performed in real-time upon the structure of the songs.

The images thus produced rely on the frequency change of the sounds and midi data from musicians by Ali Phi, controlled and created based on particle generating systems, the basic system for formation of existence.

In the first episode, we will see particle trails pictured out of hexagonal changes in nowhere.

The second episode will be about virtual formation of superficial rising and falling layers resulting from the change in the sounds.

The third episode - or anxiety - will be the rerun of images on the scenes from formation of existence taken from Adaption by Charlie Kaufman with vague image noises.

And in the fourth episode, change, we will enter a scene of creation in various fields with virtual discipline.

ObE - MAOTIK AND FRACTION

ObE - MAOTIK AND FRACTION

If you remember Dromos at the Satosphere during MUTEK last year, and it's hard not to, we are very happy to announce that the duo Mathieu Le Sourd a.k.a maotik, and Eric Raynaud a.k.a Fraction are back with ObE for another stellar 360 immersive residency at SAT, expanding boundaries and minds with daily shows.

ObE which starts tomorrow January 15th and runs till February 14th is described as an interactive, living installation accredited with a mind of its own! Looking forward to that.

At The Creators Project we learn:

"Born from the interplay between audiovisual art and interactive installation, ObE is a unique sensory experience. This hybrid production plunges the viewer into an auditory, visual journey that is experimental and organic.

Alternating between chapters that are pre-determined by the artists and interactive ObE moments, the dynamic 35-minute framework facilitates an exploration of the work's ambient ecosystem. The project is the place where minimalistic, pared-down generative 3D visuals managed by Derivative Touch Designer, compositing, and 5.1 sound processing with electro-acoustic influences meet. They melt together and deliver the viewer to the heart of a destabilizing environment to discover ObE as a living digital organism.

Technically-speaking, the project boasts a circular interface equipped with infra-red sensors controlled by Arduino and MAX/MSP which create the viewer's psychedelic experience. The viewer engages in an exchange with the art/being that is ObE, acting according to its visual, auditory flux. By moving a hand in the same way the theremin is played, the viewer can participate to the construction/deconstruction of the work of art."

More to come!

S O L A R I S FROM ODAIBE

S O L A R I S FROM ODAIBE

music cliff martinez - first sleep

Bartek Szlachcic lives in Wroclaw, Poland and is a graphic designer and electronic music producer interested in visualizing sound with experimental tools. Bartek graduated from The Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw and has an MFA in multimedia space creation. In December 2011 he was in an artist-in-residency at Culture Lab, Newcastle University where he worked on the animation "Portrait of the Ghost drummer". Since 2009 he has produced audiovisual works and musical cooperations as ODAIBE and presented his works at numerous festivals across Europe including Scopitone Nantes, Vision'R'Paris, Transvizualia Gdynia, Shiny Toys Mullheim, WRO Biennale Wroclaw, Lunchmeat Praga, Synesthesia Wroclaw and Heineken Open Air Gdynia.

Bartek tells us "Working previously with softwares like Resolume, Max/MSP/Jitter, After Effects and Maya I think that TouchDesigner's modularity connects what I use mostly in all those softwares. But for me it all starts with a sketch...

I've drawn since I can remember and drawing for me is always a starting point when I create animation. I sketch my ideas, try to express feelings and words with lines and shading. Even when I work with software I also draw and visualize ideas on paper. Raw notes are essential in this process.

"Solaris" is an effect of learning TouchDesigner and messing around mainly with particles, forces, animation editor and TOPs. Although I used TouchDesigner 3 years ago for small interactive exercises in university, nearly two months ago I came back to it and hugged strongly :-) Now I work in TouchDesigner on live visuals for an international audiovisual event called "Eklektik Session".

I also plan to use it for VJ'ing workshops at the Audiovisual Technology Centre in Wroclaw where I work as a graphic designer/video editor."
