new mac pro?

Discuss graphics hardware, computer hardware, and input/output devices to use with TouchDesigner

new mac pro?

Postby mattleaf » Sat Apr 26, 2014 5:53 am

I know NVidea cards are required to run Touch, does this mean the new Mac Pro is a no-deal?

It strikes me as a great portable system for touch designer, if only its graphics cards were up to spec.

Anyone have any experience with it or given it a go?

Some folks are running other AMD cards, not sure what the ones in there actually compare to. Maybe google that and check what other AMD cards people on the forum are using.

Depending on your needs you could probably build a Shuttle or Silverstone SG02 with more or less same specs and a k5000 for what that costs.

I wonder if its radical design makes it really that portable at the end of the day .... after connecting it in various ways. Sometimes a box is a good thing, IMO.

I wouldn't mind the design if it had 1 or 2 extra pci slots. Boxes do stack nicely though...

Mmm, yeah Shuttle and Silverstone are options.

Whats appealing with the Mac Pro's is the form factor, it's literally sackable in your carry-on luggage and you'll stay under weight. The thought of sending this stuff tumbling down conveyer belts is terrifying.

I swear, the one reason I still use Mac these days is form factor. That and VDMX. But if Touch replaces that well...

And If the Mac Pro is any indication of what's to come in desktops then hopefully there's more portable desktops in the 5kg range in future.

Some of those Alienware & Asus laptops are literally the same weight as a Mac Pro.

AMD cards should work fine with TouchDesigner but we don't have much testing milage on the FirePro cards so some bugs might pop up. We are committed to getting the medium to high-end FirePro cards running smoothly, we just can't guarantee that until we get some of these cards in house for development.

I've noticed a certain company in town using these:

I was looking at grabbing a couple of those but I was really disappointed they weren't willing to give me a significant price cut to have them shipped without video cards, since I've got enough of those to sink a ship.
