Why CineForm ?

What are the advantages and use cases of CineForm compare to other codecs ?

The quality is generally higher than HAPQ. Especially noticeable in soft gradients. The file sizes are smaller than HAPQ. Cineform hits the CPU quite a bit harder than HAPQ. Compresses slightly faster than H264. File sizes are much larger than H264 or HVEC. I think cineform hits the CPU less than H264 but haven’t fully tested that yet and likely lots of caviets.

Cineform supports RGBA.

Cineform is now open source.

Cineform is compatible with Adobe products. So its a nice path out of TouchDesigner direct into Adobe products and visa versa. It can be used in situations where you want to recomp in other systems. So if you were using TD as content generation for an edit in Premiere it would be ideal.

The main downside is you will likely not be able to encode cineform in realtime as you can with HAPQ.

It’s our best alternative to Apple Pro Res or Avid DNXHD. I hope eventually we will also support the 10, 12 and 16 bit versions of Cineform.

My tests so far show Cineform performing well at 4K 8bit RGBA on a standard powerful PC…

thanks for the info Jarret
