OCTOBER 2017

Title: TOUCHDESIGNER WORKSHOP AT GENERATE FESTIVAL
Instructor: Max Pfisterer
Dates: Saturday, October 21, 14: 00-18: 00
Location: Universitätsbibliothek Tübingen, Wilhelmstraße 32, 72074 Tübingen
Experience: Beginner
Cost: 5 Euro
Focus: The graduate designer Max Pfisterer from Stuttgart founded the VJ-Team Frischvergiftung in 2007 with Willy Löbl and Joe Ginciauskas. Hundreds of appearances and visualization projects formed the graphic designer as an animation and motion specialist. At the GENERATE! ° Festival 2017 he realized the video mapping GenerACT and gave a workshop on the real-time engine TouchDesigner.
All interested are invited. Who wants, can gladly pack their own computer and play along. The software is available for Microsoft Windows and macOS as a trial version with minimal restrictions and should be installed before the start. The workshop provides a rough overview of the software and the possibility to create small interactive tools that show the different application possibilities of TouchDesigner.

Title: IMPOSSIBLE OBJECTS
Instructor: Ana Herruzo (Herruzo-Pierce), Brandon Kruysman (Kruysman | Proto), Jonathan Proto (Kruysman | Proto)
Dates: October 30 - November 01, 2017
Location: ACADIA 2017 Workshops, MIT School of Architecture and Planning, Department of Architecture
Experience: Basic 3d modeling (preferred experience in parametric and animation software)
Focus:Beyond the 2-Dimensional screen of graphics, and the three-dimensional aspect of products, designers are facing new challenges in light of advancement in artificial intelligence, robotics, and smart environments. In addition to common topics studied during the traditional design process (aesthetics, function, usability), robotic systems demand a closer investigation into the object in both time and space. This workshop aims to explore the often convoluted dialogue between our digital design environments and the physical realities we strive to realize them within. Our work will focus on bi-directional modes of communication between these environments in order to find new mediums of design opportunity.

Machine / Hardware / Materials:
Multimedia Equipment (i.e. 1080HD projectors)
External motion tracking device (i.e. Kinect, HTC Vive)
Optional: Motion Control System (i.e. low payload robot arm)

Software:
Rhinoceros 5.0 / Grasshopper
TouchDesigner

Participants to bring:
Windows Laptop with Rhino/Grasshopper and TouchDesigner installed and activated

Registration for the ACADIA 2017 Workshops will open soon.

NOVEMBER 2017

Title: INTRODUCTION TO TOUCHDESIGNER
Instructor: Antoine Goldschmidt (Magic Street)
Dates: November 3, 2017 from 9am to 1pm
Location: Palain des Congres, Kikk Festival
Experience: Beginner
Cost: Free
Focus:TouchDesigner is a visual development platform for making interactive 3D art, multi-screen interactive experiences, museum exhibits, data visualizations, architectural projections, live visual performances, and more.

For everyone who wants to get a fast track start on working with TouchDesigner, this workshop will provide a good basis to gain an initial understanding on workflow, concepts and techniques while equipping attendees with the knowledge to start creating interactive / generative setups.

Antoine Goldschmidt is the founder of Magicstreet, a Brussels based studio that designs and creates interactive and multimedia installations & scenographies for museums, public spaces, or large events. With both an engineering and performing arts background, his work aims at creating user experiences at the frontier between real and virtual spaces. He has been working with Touchdesigner for several years in various and very different projects.

Title: INTRO TO TOUCHDESIGNER LDI 2017 WITH MATTHEW RAGAN
Instructor: Matthew Ragan, Interactive Engineer, Obsura Digital
Dates: November 13 & 14, 2017 from 9:30am to 5:30pm
Location: LDI Las Vegas Convention Center, Los Vegas, NV
Experience: Beginner Intermediate
Target Audience: If turnkey tools are out of your price range or lack the flexibility and adaptability you need for your media projects this might be the workshop for you. If you are an artist/designer/engineer that's looking for ways to engage with clients in ways that are outside of the bounds of traditional playback systems this might be the workshop for you. If you've been experimenting with TouchDesigner but want some direction in how to think about incorporating it into your larger workflow or project deployment, this might be the workshop for you. This workshop is built around beginner and intermediate concepts in working with TouchDesigner in installation / performance settings—no prior experience with TouchDesigner or Python is expected from participants.
Cost:$325 ($425 after 9/14) includes lunch

Focus:Join Matthew Ragan from Obscura Digital for a whirlwind tour of developing custom playback and generative systems. Over the course of two full days participants will learn the fundamental principles and organizational flow of working in Derivative’s TouchDesigner— for the uninitiated, TouchDesigner is a node based programming environment used in installations, live events, and museums internationally. This workshop will largely be focused on the intersection of art / design and the development of new tools for live performance. While there are a growing number of tools for media playback in live events, there are precious few for creating dynamic and generative artwork. In this workshop we will look at both how to playback traditionally made content, as well as how to build generative real-time rendered environments. Participants will also look at using existing modules in TouchDesigner for projection mapping applications large and small. More than just a flash and trash demo, this workshop aims to help familiarize participants with a development environment as well as examine the challenges and opportunities when designing real-time systems.

Session highlights:
•    An understanding the development environment
•    Best practices for development and organization
•    Foundational principles for playing and cueing traditional media
•    Foundational principles and experience creating generative artwork
•    An overview of techniques for building user interfaces for interactive systems
•    Experience projection mapping with TouchDesigner
•   An introduction to Python as a scripting language
