Title: LED PIXEL MAPPING WITH TOUCHDESIGNER
Instructor: Karl Skene

Experience Level: Beginner with some prior basic TouchDesigner knowledge required.

Focus:Addressable LEDs are used by installation artists, VJs, makers, and designers of all sorts. Everyone seems to love them because they are so versatile, functional, expressive, and beautiful. The fully customizable nature of TouchDesigner makes it an excellent platform for working with this creative tool. In this workshop, we will build a flexible system in TouchDesigner for pixel mapping and controlling LEDs. This will consist of a few simple, yet dynamic elements for animating lines, shapes and textures. These elements will touch on some generally useful TD practices such as 3D rendering, customized components, preset storage/recall, and integrating with music. Participants will also learn some basic UI building techniques, which can allow for a fluid workflow for both programming and performing. We will have some LED fixtures present for demonstration.

Karl Skene is a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary new media artist blending light, projections, animations and sonic elements to create one-of-a-kind interactive experiences. Karl has leant his skills and expertise to projects for clients such as Red Bull, Absolut, Shopify, BMW, and others.

Title: INTRO TO GENERATIVE VISUALS - TOUCHDESIGNER

Focus: This intensive 12 hour introduction workshop introduces participants to the creation of interactive visuals with TouchDesigner. This Canadian software is internationally known as a reference when producing high level interactive visuals and has been adopted as much by artists than by creators for large scale commercial projects such as the set of Gravity or the set of an interactive Yves Saint Laurent fashion show.

Participants will learn the software’s interface, discover its different tools, how to use video, images and 3D geometry, how to use mathematics, and will touch on the integration of interactive control interfaces, all through various practical exercises and small projects.

A follow-up intermediate course is also offered.

Objectives and Course Content:

  • Learn the user interface ;
  • Discover the family of operators (TOP, CHOP, SOP, DAT, COMP) ;
  • Use video, images and 3D geometry ;
  • Use mathematics ;
  • Learn how to integrate interactive control interfaces such as Kinect (camera), Leap Motion (hand movement) or other types of controllers ;
  • Use OSC, MIDI or ArtNet to connect to other software and external control interfaces ;
  • Discover examples of creative productions using the software ;
  • Learn through exercises and small projects.

About the Instructor:

Quentin Bleton is a solutions architect at Moment Factory, and responsible of the different research and development projects, as well as of the development of the X-Agora platform. After working as main programmer on the Nine Inch Nails - Lights In The Sky project, and the Sagrada Familia show, notably, he developed an expertise in the field of 3D programing and video mapping.

Focus: In this intensive 12 hour intermediate workshop over one weekend, participants will start playing with different types of shaders (pixel, vertex, and, to a lesser extent, geometry) in order to understand and use several techniques, will learn how to optimize their work and will acquire the necessary skills for working with Kinect depth data.

TouchDesigner is internationally known as a tool of choice when producing high level interactive visual experiences, and this workshop will start delving into the skills crucial in that context.


WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES & COURSE CONTENT

  • Learn to configure a developer environment ;
  • Learn how to use pixel shaders : general principles, GLSL, texture and samplers, generative design, blend modes, fractals, simulation, and more ;

  • Use mathematics ;
  • Discover geometry shaders and how they can be used for visualizing Kinect point cloud data in 3D ;
