rendering in 'Chromadepth' 3D...

Postby rodberry » Sun Jan 20, 2008 11:03 am

HI all, I got some free chromadepth glasses off a friend and want to try them out with touch.

chromadepth uses a special lense on one eye that refracts different color ranges differently, making deep blues look far away and reds close when we look thru the glasses.

I am thinking to make a ramp running from blue through green with yellow in the middle, then orange and finally red.

from there, I'm a bit lost. would I do it with a lookup TOP and a Depth top to convert the depth map into the colors of the ramp?

my first attempts have failed to produce a depth map.

can anyone put me on the right track?

Here's my first try at a chromadepth renderer...

because I'm using 'perspective form camera' in a texture SOP to get the map from the depth TOP, via a lookup TOP driven by a chromadepth color ramp.

the near and far settings of the camera are critical to getting this to work with the depth TOP it's probably best to adjust the 'far' parameter in the camera first.

I have some questions about how to still get other textures in the normal manner , say othographic etc., especially if I want to add a normal map etc.

all suggestions welcome.

once I've fixed it up I'll make it a .tox and put it in the shared stuff page.

Hi Rodney.
I just so happen to carry a pair of chromadepth glasses in my desk drawer.
Looks very interesting.
I added a level TOP to your network to make the reds a little redder.
Changing the background from blue to red has interesting effects on the perceived depth of the text description
in relation to the torus.

Cheers

:) I found that I can tweak the color ramp to get more fine control over the colors at various depths.

also, I found that standing further away helped bring out the 3D magic.

I am thinking of putting these inside an old mono HMD (Sony glasstron) to make the virtual world stereo.
