A question for users: Video Codecs for Movie Out TOP

Postby malcolm » Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:35 pm

Which video codecs do you use in the Movie Out TOP?
Which ones do you wish it had?

Which audio codecs do you want to be able to use when creating a movie with audio?

One thing I'd love to be able to do is to save out a video with other data, such as OSC, embedded in it.

I guess the only way at present is to save out the osc in a file with timestamps and use it together with the video elsewhere.

I remember the orignal mpeg4 standard talked about all sorts of extra data, including streaming geometery, that could piggyback in a stream or a file but I only see video and audio supported.

I haven't really used the video out TOP too much. Mostly I have used it in either uncompressed or photo jpeg to be able to have the highest possible quality. Lately though I've noticed when streaming shows online that the xvid codec is one of the best codec's for video and audio quality and outputs very small files. It blows H.264 away for video quality. At least as far as I've seen online.

cheers

I also haven't used Movieout much, but doesnt the quicktime container itself offer a myriad of possibilities for extra embedded tracks of a wide variety ? Back in the days of nato55(on mac) there was a lot of emphasis on quicktime's multiple tracks, editing them, and accessing/embedding various types of of non A/V data.I didn't do a lot of exploration in this area of nato, but I recall things like a text track, timecode track, midi track etc..., which to this day (with quicktime pro) are still accessible/editable. What if movieout were able to stuff some non-AV data into other QT tracks ?

Sadly the Xvid codec is GPL licensed so I'm unable to use it. I also am a big fan of it's quality.

So far I've added on:

H.264 via the GPU
Quicktime Animation Codec
Motion JPEG
MPEG4 Part 2
Cineform

For audio we have:
ALAC (Apple lossless)
MP3
16, 24 and 32-bit uncompressed PCM.

i know it's video codecs in the subject, but it's going to be very nice to have uncompressed PCM audio instead of mp3 on the audio side!

@ruigato
I think you should read this part again:

For audio we have:
ALAC (Apple lossless)
MP3
16, 24 and 32-bit uncompressed PCM.

I'm assuming Apple ProRes HQ is also a licensed sort of thing? I suppose animation is very similar though yeah and could be achieved after getting an animation quicktime out? Just running into a project that needs ProRes as the deliverable...

Ya we'd have to license ProRes, a quick look around makes me thing it would be an expensive add-on ($5000 per copy) or so.
