Just found the program, got a few questions.

Postby kabukiman » Tue Dec 01, 2009 7:24 pm

Hi,

my name is Luke and I'm a student currently studying Multimedia Design and Technology at Brunel university in London.

As my final year project I've decided to investigate creating visuals for live visual performing with a focus on the dynamically manipulated content. I've looked into 2d audio reactive Flash stuff using VJing software such as Resolume and while researching found a bit of info on Touch Designer.

I've had a look through the wiki and to be honest can't seem to make heads or tails of it and the tutorial videos didn't seem to work :S . I just wanted to know if it's possible with the software to import 3ds max objects into TD and have it be textured live and have it's size/shape/ position manipulated through a midi controller or audio input? If it is I'll delve properly into the documentation (and probably ask for a lot of help!) and try and get it all going.

Cheers in advance, and sorry for all the noob questions it's late here and I think i need to sleep :P

Hey, you can import models using the FBX format, which I 3ds max can export to. From there you'll be able to hook up various controls (yes, both midi and audio, plus many more) to the model to change it's size, position etc.

I'd start off with this article
http://www.derivative.ca/wiki/index.php ... chDesigner

and feel free to ask more questions as you get deeper into this.

Awesome cheers for the quick reply,

and this could all be controlled live for performing thought a midi controller? Textures could be changed and the output put to a second monitor?

If you can this is definitely an area I'm gonna explore thoroughly after some sleep.

Thanks again

Yup, that's all easy to do. Our TOP operators allow you to do all kinds of real-time manipulation to textures also.

Hey,

Touch is used by a lot of people for exactly what you are describing: "visuals for live visual performing with a focus on manipulating content". For performances we use a variety of different Controllers that work via Midi (like FaderFox, XSession or Behringers BCF2000 as a couple examples)

Also textures can be changed dynamically and the output can be displayed on a second monitor.

For some examples on what people have been doing in live settings, check the TouchDesigner Vimeo group at http://www.vimeo.com/groups/touchdesigner
There is also a group with a small collection of Tutorial Videos: http://www.vimeo.com/groups/insidetouchdesigner

cheers

Thanks again,

didn't expect so much help so quickly :) . And I've got a BCR2000 winging it's way to me now. Those vids look really nice, exactly what I was looking for, wish I'd found this program sooner now!
