That node is meant for special purpose attributes. To create more general attributes you can use the Vertex SOP, Point SOP or Primitive SOP, depending on the type of attribute you want to create.

I want to be able to create custom attributes like in Houdini.

Mainly because the method I use to extract multiple audio frequencies using the pitch chop needs a custom attribute so that I can copy/stamp the channel data to drive animation. It works great!

why dosen't the attribute create sop let me create attributes?

The ability to create custom attributes has been added to the Point SOP and Primitive SOP for the next release.

In the meantime you can just use one of the current attributes (like color), created in the Point SOP, and then rename it using the Attribute SOP.

I agree, these nodes need better names.
